Quantitative scores discourage risk taking, increase anxiety, and distract students from focusing on their learning. Ungrading refers to a set of methods that are an alternative to this approach. By encouraging self-reflection, providing qualitative feedback, and allowing opportunities for revision, ungrading can create more transparency in the assessment process, lower student anxiety, and focus attention on learning and growth. This workshop introduces participants to several approaches to ungrading. Participants will also hear from multiple UGA instructors using ungrading in their classrooms. Lastly, participants will have the opportunity to identify ways that ungrading could be brought into their own teaching.
