About this Event
234 W. Hancock Ave, Athens, GA 30601
French cinema is among the most celebrated in the world. Film Scholar Dudley Andrew’s new French Cinema: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford UP, 2024) provides a perfect test case for understanding why filmmaking in France has been so special. Thanks to Professor Andrew’s visit to Athens and UGA, this Cinema Roundtable will discuss the research, writing, and audience for books on France and its cinematic legacy.
Dudley Andrew (Yale) is among the world’s top experts on French film history and theory. For this panel, Rachel Gabara (UGA Romance Languages), author of the forthcoming Reclaiming Realism, and moderator Richard Neupert (UGA Film Studies), author of the recent French Film History, 1895-1946, will interview Prof. Andrew about French cinema and discuss the process of writing cinema history for the contemporary marketplace. The audience will be asked to join in the conversation.
This Cinema Roundtable will be held in the Ciné Lab. It is free and open to the public.
