About this Event
300 S Hull Street, Athens, GA 30605
Join the UGA Special Collections Libraries for the induction of 2025 Georgia Writers Hall of Fame inductee Deborah Blum, celebrated author of The Poisoner’s Handbook (2010) and The Poison Squad (2018). Blum is a Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer, who's career in investigative science writing began right here at the University of Georgia, where she was a student reporter for The Red & Black. Known for her works about chemistry and toxicology, Blum uses her works to illuminate the existence of poisons in our everyday lives, as well as our history. In conversation with the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety Director Dr. Franciso Diez-Gonzalez, Blum will discuss the history of food safety regulations in the United States and how current trends impact local and state-level oversight. The event will conlude with Blum's formal induction into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, with a light reception following. This event is free and open to the public. Parking is free in the Hull Street Parking Deck after 5 p.m., located directly across the street from the Special Collections Building. Requests for accommodations should be made as soon as possible prior to the scheduled event. For further information regarding accessibility, please contact meredithbyoung@uga.edu. This event is in partnership with the Richard B. Russell Library's annual Food, Power, and Politics Lecture.
