About this Event
Join the UGA Qualitative Research Program for the last UGA QUAL Lab Speaker Series of the semester: Listening as a gift: What listening (still) has to offer qualitative inquiry presented by Dr. Susan Cannon.
As technologies make it easier not to listen, when meetings are summed up by AI and interviews are automatically transcribed, qualitative researchers may feel the pull to save time by not listening. Yet, this logic relies on the assumption and understanding that time is scarce. Kimmerer (2024) suggested that “recognizing ‘enoughness’ is a radical act in an economy that is always urging us to consume more” (p. 12). What if we had enough time? What other questions and insights might (another) listening offer? Listening takes time, and the process of listening creates ongoing and reciprocal relations. In this presentation, Cannon will trace her engagements with listening, transcription, responsibility, and representation and share thoughts on what listening (still) has to offer qualitative inquiry.
