About this Event
425 S Lumpkin Street, Athens, GA 30605
Join guests for a retirement reception and alumni panel conversation in honor of William Kretzschmar, Harry and Jane Willson Professor in Humanities, whose work has influenced not just the fields of linguistics and English but interdisciplinary work, digital humanities, and more around the world.
In the panel, former students and mentees of Kretzschmar will come together to discuss his profound impact on their professional journeys. As they share stories, participants will reflect on Kretzschmar's enduring academic influence and the connections he fostered over the years in honor of his upcoming retirement.
The panelists include linguists, digital humanists, and data scientists:
Ireland, Burkette, and Tamasi have all worked under Kretzschmar, who directed each of their PhD research programs at UGA. Kretzschmar and Beavan have been friends and colleagues since meeting at the University of Glasgow more than a decade ago.
This celebration is hosted by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts in partnership with the departments of English and linguistics. During his visit, David Beavan will take part in a series of digital humanities and research software engineering workshops hosted by the UGA Libraries and the Willson Center.
