Against the Colonizer's Burden: Creating communities of care
Building collective power towards liberation requires creating networks of care that exist autonomously outside of socially controlled non-profits and other industrial complexes. In this conversation, we'll talk about experiences in organizing mutual aid efforts.
Speaker
Bonn (they/them) overcame a difficult childhood and time in the foster care system with the help of the education they received at NAU. After graduating, Bonn worked to fight for equity and justice for women and children in Arizona, with a focus on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women campaign. Through activism and education, Bonn was able to heal and learned to use their strength and knowledge to help others find resilience in their own lives. Bonn is an experienced Community Outreach Coordinator with a demonstrated history of working in the violence prevention field. Their work centers on using personal experiences of being a formerly incarcerated and fostered Border Native to raise awareness about state sactioned family separation, cultural genocide, and sexual violence in the so-called "US" - experiences which they've gained due to having a missing Indigenous mother via deportation. They agitate current notions of the means to reach Black and Indigenous autonomy, namely by participation in communally organized mutual aid and reconnecting folks to the land. They have a Comparative Cultural Studies BA focused in Art History with Minors in Museum Studies and Asian Studies from Northern Arizona University.
