Shalyn Claggett is a professor of English at Mississippi State University and the author of Equal Natures: Popular Brain Science and Victorian Women's Writing (SUNY Press, 2023). She is at work on a book titled Victorian Cinema: Magic Lantern Shows and the British Imagination, which explores mass-production, distribution, and consumption of audio-visual magic lantern narrative. In this lecture, performance, and exhibition of material from her own collection, she will discuss and demonstrate the magic lantern projection technology that fascinated 19th-century audiences before the advent of motion pictures.
This roundtable discussion is presented by the English Department as part of the UGA Humanities Festival.
