With ever-growing standardized mandates, it feels increasingly difficult to find one’s teacher voice in the classroom--and to implement curriculum that encourages students to express their own. This workshop will unpack research-based practices that make room for teacher and student autonomy in standards-based curriculum through creative reading and writing techniques. The instructor will model instructional and learning strategies while participants workshop ideas. Attendees will leave with access to digital resources they can use with their own students.

Instructor: Jennifer Whitley, Athens Community Career Academy
Whitley is a doctoral candidate in Language and Literacy Education at The University of Georgia. She has over 11 years of teaching experience and is now back in the high school ELA classroom at Athens Community Career Academy after teaching with the Institute for Women’s Studies at UGA for the last three years. Jennifer’s scholarship and research is grounded in feminist and critical theories, with a strong social justice foundation. Her current research uses narrative analysis to look at women rural school teachers and how their gender identities intersect with place, unpacking ruralities from a feminist lens. She has published various articles and book chapters, but her article, ‘These fragments I have shored against my ruins’: Intertextuality in the dialogical secondary classroom, won the Journal of Literacy Innovation’s 2016 Article of the Year Award. She is also proud to be the 2018 recipient of The University of Georgia’s George Hugh Boyd Memorial Scholarship and a 2019 recipient of UGA’s Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. She began her work with The Red Clay Writing Project as a graduate of the Summer Institute in 2016 and has collaborated with middle school-aged students at Camp Red Clay over the last two summers.
