Guest artist recital: Apparitions, Dances, and Fantasies by Geoffrey Burleson
Burleson teaches piano at Princeton University and is professor of music and director of piano studies at Hunter College-City University of New York. His visit is sponsored by the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.
Burleson has performed to wide acclaim throughout Europe and North America and is equally active as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician, and jazz performer. The New York Times has hailed his solo performances as “vibrant” and “compelling," and the Boston Globe refers to Burleson as a “remarkable pianist” whose performances are “outright thrilling.” His numerous acclaimed solo appearances include such prominent venues as the Église St-Merri in Paris, American Academy in Rome, Mitropoulos Hall in Athens, De Doelen in Rotterdam, and the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago. A prolific recording artist, Burleson has recorded more than 30 CDs as soloist and chamber musician. His most ambitious project to date is that of recording the complete piano works of Camille Saint-Saëns, being released on 6 CD volumes on the new Naxos Grand Piano label.
Burleson’s guest artist recital, Apparitions, Dances and Fantasies, opens with piano works by the iconic French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The second half of the program takes us to the late 20th and 21st centuries, featuring energetic and poignant works by David Rakowski and Mary Kouyoumdjian and Jacob TV's funky and virtuosic piano and electronics work "The Body of Your Dreams," which uses audio from a weight loss infomercial as source material. Finally, Burleson’s own compositional and improvisational skills are showcased in two selections.
