LaPlaca’s research interests surround translational research in traumatic brain injury (TBI). The goals are to better understand acute injury mechanisms, identify novel TBI biomarkers, and develop multimodal concussion assessment tools. She earned a Ph.D. in Bioengineering in injury biomechanics and completed postdoctoral training in Neurosurgery, both at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. he serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Association of Georgia (BIAG) and is an elected fellow in the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). LaPlaca has testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Veteran’s Affairs on TBI and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurotrauma. Her research has been funded by NIH, NSF, DoD, NFL/GE/UnderArmour, and the Coulter Foundation. She and Dr. David Wright have received the Atlanta Business Chronicle Healthcare Heroes Award for Healthcare Innovation for their work in novel concussion assessment technology. By working at both pre-clinical and clinical levels, the complexity of TBI can be better understood and ultimately aid in improved TBI diagnosis and treatment.
