Miriam Thaggert is professor of English and African American studies at the University of Iowa, author of Images of Black Modernism: Verbal and Visual Strategies of the Harlem Renaissance (University of MA Press, 2010), and is currently writing a book that explores the effect of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century technologies on the perception of race, gender, class and nationality in American literature. Her talk isa presentation of the Interdisciplinary Modernisms Workshop. The organizers will pre-circulate the Introduction & Chapter 5 from Images of Black Modernism.
