Mellon Grant Conversation
After inviting letters of interest for research funds from a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Willson Center has established two areas of common interest: Coastal Studies and Global Studies of the American South. Our next step is to invite UGA scholars to a conversation about how we might collectively shape these broad areas into research projects that energize humanities research on campus. The conversation is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5 in Room 265 of Park Hall. This conversation will:Outline the funds available for research in these general areas (up to $35,000 per year per group)Discuss how smaller projects might be funded as part of these two groupsDiscuss resources for faculty and students that this grant providesDiscuss how these projects will take shape and what other opportunities they will offer for faculty, the students and the communityTalk about the potential for these two areas to shape collaborative research institutionally and externally in the coming three years, with a view to possible consortium buildingDiscuss how best to name, identify and support the research areas that we have titled provisionally “Coastal Studies” and “Global Studies of the AmericanSouth” before we launch these programsA formal call for proposals will be issued in September following the meeting. Researchers can apply for smaller projects to be funded within one of the two areas of interest. Funding in the range of $3,000 to $35,000 will be available from October 1, 2018 through spring 2019 in the first year, and potentially renewable for years two and three depending on the nature of the proposal for 2019-20and 2020-21. Funds can support a range of ideas including, but not limited to, visiting speakers or partnership building, course release, research support, and undergraduate internships.
