In honor of James C. Hearn's commitment to excellence in research, the Hearn Lectureship serves to further the Louise McBee Institute's mission of increasing student exposure to experts on higher-education research, policy, leadership, and practice. As such, the Hearn Lectureship annually hosts a highly esteemed national researcher of higher education for a seminar as part of an extended visit to UGA. The inaugural lecture will be give by Laura W. Perna and will serve as the keynote address for the McBee Institute's Momentum and Barriers Symposia focused on the value of higher education.

Perna is vice provost for faculty, GSE Centennial Presidential Professor of Education, and founding executive director of the Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy (AHEAD) at the University of Pennsylvania. Perna is an expert in college access, affordability, and success, especially for low-income, first-generation, and non-traditional students. Her research examines the ways that social structures, educational practices, and public policies promote and limit college access and success, particularly for groups that continue to be underrepresented in higher education. Perna has served as president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Among other honors, Perna is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and a member of the National Academy of Education. She holds bachelor’s degrees in economics and psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and earned her master’s in public policy and Ph.D. in education from the University of Michigan.
