About this Event
300 S Hull Street, Athens, GA 30605
Free the Tapes, an event highlighting digitized audiovisual materials from members of the community, is back this fall at UGA Special Collections.
The first event, "Free the Tapes: Home Movie Edition", was a celebration of home movies from members of our community. This fall, Free the Tapes returns as "Free the Tapes: Athens Potluck Edition," focused on content created in and about Athens, Georgia.
Join others to view clips of newly digitized and preserved videos from our community, play bingo, interact with different AV formats and equipment, and learn more about the archives.
What is Free the Tapes? That box of videotapes in the attic with no way of viewing? The archivists at the Brown Media Archives want to free those videos from their outdated formats so that owners can access them again. "Free the Tapes" showcases these materials, in addition to a curated selection of home movies and amateur films from the vault. How does it work? The Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection (BMA) archivists will digitize up to three audiovisual items per household for free.
For this edition of Free the Tapes, archivists are particularly interested in materials related to Athens. For more information, contact Thomas May.
