About this Event
230 River Road, Athens, GA 30605
Faculty members perform Olivier Messiaen's "Quatuor pour la fin du temps."
Clarinet Professor D. Ray McClellan will be joined by faculty members Shakhida Azimkhodjaeva, violin; David Starkweather, cello; and Liza Stepanova, piano. Adding to the performance as the reader will be Classics Professor Erika T. Hermanowicz.
Messiaen composed and performed this 50-minute work at Stalag VII A, a prisoner-of-war camp in Görlitz, Germany. Three other professional musicians were among his fellow prisoners and after he managed to obtain some paper and a small pencil from a sympathetic guard, pianist Messiaen wrote and performed this quartet with his friends for their fellow prisoners. The inspiration for the piece is based on the mighty angels, the mystery of God and the end of time described in Book of Revelation Chapter 10. Streaming available at music.uga.edu/live-streaming.
