 arratives of explicit and implicit violence into a visual activism that us

 of Balinese cosmology. Anthropologists Brosius and Hitchner have conducted
  long-term research in Indonesia and Malaysia regarding threats to cultura
 l landscapes and displacement of indigenous communities through land degra

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition by visiting Balinese artist I Made "Bayak" Muli
 ana (Made Bayak)\, on display March 25-April 28\, 2019\, is the centerpiec
 e of a series of events taking place at various Athens and UGA venues from
  March 25 through April 7. Bayak will take part in a community-wide series
  of appearances\, performances\, and talks\, which will provide many oppor
 tunities to interact with the artist and learn about his work and the cult
 ural context in which it takes place. All events are free and open to the 
 public.\n\nGallery hours during New Gods | Old Gods:\n\nOpening reception

  4-6 p.m.\n\nThird Thursday\, April 18: 4-9 p.m.\n\nBayak’s visual pract
 ice merges images and symbols from Balinese cosmology and current Balinese
  political and ecological movements to bring attention to parasitic real e
 state development and past actions of violence within Bali. The colorful a
 nd piercing narrative works that will be on exhibition use waste plastic a
 nd trash\, ink\, acrylic paint\, stencils\, and traditional Balinese paint
 ing techniques to tell difficult stories of Balinese history. Additional d
 ocumentary photographs and videos of his work and contextual information a
 bout Bali will also be on exhibit.\n\nThe ATHICA exhibit and surrounding e
 vents are curated and organized by Peter Brosius\, Distinguished Research 
 Professor in the department of anthropology\, and Alden DiCamillo\, an int
 erdisciplinary artist\, graduate student in the Lamar Dodd School of Art\,
  and ATHICA intern. Together with Sarah Hitchner\, assistant research scie
 ntist at UGA\, they are conducting research on how Bayak’s work weaves n
 arratives of explicit and implicit violence into a visual activism that us
 es innovative material experimentation combined with energetic portrayals
