#defashionugaStudents from TXMI 4900 (Fashion and Sustainability) invite guests to a one-day, pop-up exhibition showcasing what they learned throughout the semester and their ideas for a more sustainable and just fashion system. From economic models to decolonial thinking, each student has created an interactive display that will educate visitors about a topic pertaining to sustainability while inviting them to reflect on their personal relationships to clothing and consumption at large. The displays will also provide visitors with tools and practical knowledge for incorporating more sustainable clothing practices into each of our daily lives.
The title Defashion comes from a term coined by the activist group Fashion Act Now to address the need to challenge the dominant, globalized fashion system that relies upon exploitation, planned obsolescence, and boundless economic growth. The term represents a transition towards clothing systems that are more fair, pluralistic, and regenerative, meeting the needs of local communities. With these goals in mind, student work in this exhibition will provide hope for a better future for people and the planet.
This event doubles as the end-of-year celebration for the members of Fair Fashion, UGA’s sustainable fashion club. The students in TXMI 4900 have collaborated with Fair Fashion throughout the semester to organize many wonderful events including clothing swaps and a demonstration to raise awareness about garment workers’ rights as part of Fashion Revolution Week.
Drinks and snacks will be provided by Fair Fashion.
