Connection Series with Pazdro and Avci
Join us for the RBC Connection Series and make a connection.
Speakers: Robert Pazdro, assistant professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Pazdro and his team led a year-long study examining the blood levels of a hormone called growth differentiation factor 11, GDF11, in mice. Recent animal studies have found restoring GDF11 in old mice can reverse cardiovascular aging and rejuvenate their muscles and brains. The group is actively elucidating the genetic mechanisms that drive aging and age-related chronic diseases. Focus on fundamental pathogenic mechanisms, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and changes in novel circulating factors.
Fikri Avci – Avci Lab is an interdisciplinary research group at the interface of carbohydrate research and immunology. Theteam’s objective is to explore the treatment of and protection from infectious diseases and cancer by understanding key molecular and cellular interactions between the components of the immune system and carbohydrate antigens associated with microbes or cancers. Avci Lab is part of University of Georgia Center for Molecular Medicine and Department of Biochemistry andMolecular Biology.
