Suh's talk will draw from his new book, The Allure of Empire: American Encounters with Asians in the Age of Transpacific Expansion and Exclusion (Oxford University Press, March 2023), which tells the story of how the politics of interracial cooperation worked to define “progress” in an age of imperial subjugation and immigrant restriction.
Suh is a historian of race, ethnicity, and inequality, specializing in transpacific connections between the United States and East Asia and Asian American history. Since arriving at Emory, Suh has won multiple awards for research, teaching, and service, including the Laura Jones Hardman Award for Excellence in Service to the Emory Community for work with Asian American students on campus. His research has been highlighted by NPR, AJC, and Time magazine.
Sponsored by the Center for Asian Studies and the Department of History.
