Case Study: Products vs. Discoveries

Innovation Gateway’s Technology Transfer Educational Series, “Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry,” is a four-part series that highlights how Innovation Gateway collaborates with UGA researchers to maximize the impact of their discoveries by partnering with industry or helping to launch startup companies to move those discoveries to the marketplace.

The second event in the series will be held Nov. 7 from 1:30 – 2:30p.m. in room 201 of the Pharmacy South Building and will feature Michael Fisher, director of product development at the Global Center for Medical Innovation (GCMI).

Michael has over 20 years of experience developing medical technologies. He will present a case study on the transition of technology from discovery to product that describes the medical device development process, project timelines and costs. He will discuss the time required to execute the project and highlight places where the process strengthens the product’s intellectual properties.

At the end of the presentation, attendees should be somewhat familiar with a phase-gate approach to product development, risk mitigation strategies, required processes and costs, and the diverse talents required for the successful development of medical products.

The event is open to UGA faculty, staff and students and will include light refreshments. Registration is encouraged but not required. RSVP to Tyler Duggins at or 706-542-8969.
