One Health: Hindsight is 2020, Prevention is Key
"Between animal and human medicine there are no dividing lines - nor should there be" - Rudolf Virchow, "Father of Pathology," 1856.
The concept of One Health has existed for hundreds of years under many different names. It is the simple idea that, even in all their complexities, human, animal, and environmental health are interconnected and inseparable from one another - what affects one affects them all, what helps to heal one can help to heal them all.
If COVID-19 and 2020 have taught us anything, it is that we all share One Health.
This course will provide an overview of One Health, its history, and its importance. We will delve into stories involving all three areas of One Health, as well as analyze how COVID-19 and other pandemics have occurred and how we can prevent them in the future. We will discuss the importance of sustainability and intersectional health, conservation, and research. Students can expect to research examples of One Health and give short presentations, as well as take part in small and large group discussions. To cap the day, students will split into groups representing different areas of science, research a problem facing the world from these different perspectives, and then reconvene to discuss potential solutions together - demonstrating the value of multiple different viewpoints and areas of expertise. This class is for anyone who has an interest in science, the natural world, medicine, environmentalism, and understanding how COVID-19 came to impact all of our lives so completely, as well as how we can improve all of our futures together.
