Soffia Gunnarsdottir, instructor of art history at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, will present the lecture “Pottery, Politics, and the Parthenon.”
Speaker: Soffia Gunnarsdottir is an instructor in art history at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. She received her Ph.D. in the History of Art from Yale University in 2023 with a dissertation titled “Ceramics and the Sacred in Greek Antiquity,” which was awarded the Frances Blanshard Prize for the overall best dissertation submitted to the Yale History of Art department. She also holds additional graduate degrees from Yale and an M.A. from the University of Toronto. Her research on Greek art and architecture focuses on ceramics, material processes in art and text, relationships between manufacture and religion, and the history of scholarship. She is currently working on a book project on ceramics from Greek sanctuaries, and on an article that reevaluates the significance of thousands of fragments of painted pottery found on the Athenian Acropolis in the nineteenth century.
