Active Learning is an approach based on the work of Dr. Lilli Nielsen, a developmental psychologist and preschool teacher, who worked for over 43 years with children and adults with multiple disabilities in Denmark.  Active Learning is not just about a piece of equipment, such as a “Little Room,” but it refers to a total approach for promoting the development of individuals with severe multiple disabilities. Initially this instructional method was designed for individuals who were visually impaired and deafblind, it has proven to be effective with individuals with other significant disabilities, such as autism and cerebral palsy.  It can be used with all learners but is most effective for those who have significant multiple disabilities and are functioning in the 0–48-month developmental level.
