Course Descriptions
Aircraft & Spacecraft Design
In this class, you will explore the amazing world of flight and see how aircraft and spacecraft are designed and tested. You will discover how scientific principles, such as energy, momentum, pressure, and gravity, have led to incredible advances in aerospace technology. Experiment with various structural, propulsion, and control system designs, and take part in hands-on activities like designing, assembling, and flying styrofoam gliders, launching two-liter compressed air/water rockets, and trying out flight gear used by Air Force test pilots. Come find out what it means to make something fly!
Aspiring Zoologists
Can you imagine living your life in captivity? What would you need to keep your intellect, physical fitness, and quality of life high? These are questions that zoologists commonly ask themselves when faced with the task of keeping zoo animals not only healthy, but happy. In this class, you will put on the hat of a true zoologist and design an animal enrichment device or idea for a species of your choosing. You will dive deeply into the inherited traits and learned behavior of the animal and advance your greater knowledge about living organisms and the scientific process.
Cellular Gene-ius: Introduction to Microbiology & Genetics
Wonder why you look like your parents? Do you want to be a scientist, or just learn more about biology? This class will introduce you to those tiny organisms that live all around us (and inside of us) as we explore what makes us, US! Build your own DNA model, learn the scientific method, and discover how those teeny-tiny cells work. In this class, we will cover general biology, microbiology, and genetics in a fun, hands-on environment.
Down for the Account: Business Bootcamp for Beginners New!
Who said accountants were boring? Come learn how businesses measure success on their financial statements and how accountants use math to create them! We will start a new company, pitch to investors, and record all our transactions the same way all businesses do to make financial statements. Then we will analyze our performance using the same ratios Fortune 500 Companies from Apple to Walmart use.
Engineering Design Challenge
Ever wonder about the exact process an engineer goes through to design and create, well, ⦠anything? Did you know that there are particular steps, processes, and metrics that all engineers must learn, whether they are designing a bridge, a parachute, or a roller coaster? Come learn this design process and start to think like an engineer as you are challenged to complete many engineering projects with your very own design team! In this class, your group will compete against others as you design comically complex Rube Goldberg machines, elegantly supportive egg cradles for our egg drop challenge, and much more! The skills you learn in this class will be indefinitely useful to you as you continue to grow as a problem-solver and future engineer.
Magical Murder
The law of the Ministry of Magic, which coincidentally copied the American legal system, is swift and just. Harry Potter stands accused of criminal homicide. The victim...Lord Voldemort! Learn the basics of trial advocacy and legal analysis, and utilize those skills to argue for or against Mr. Potter. Public speaking, group work, creative thinking, and logic will set the stage for the trial of the century! Muggles welcome, witches and wizards preferred. SPOILER ALERT: Actual plot elements, characters, and events from the Harry Potter series are discussed in this course.
Sports Medicine
Come and see a new side of sportsâ¦the medical side! In this course, you will examine the three most important components of taking care of athletes and their injuries: diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. You also will learn the techniques and skills needed to properly implement each one. Whether you are asked to perform basic upper extremity taping, simulated first aid, or cranial nerve testing, you will not stay seated for long! This course culminates with "Rehab Olympics, where you will test your knowledge and newly learned skills by competing with your peers to quickly replicate challenges injured athletes might face.
Academic Adventures are open to current 5th and 6th grade students and are comprised of a full Saturday of intensive academic study designed specifically for gifted students. Each course explores a topic not typically covered in school while encouraging creativity and critical thinking. We provide gifted students with opportunities to learn at a higher classroom level, sharpen their learning skills, explore their passion for a specific field or academic discipline, and interact with like-minded, motivated peers.
