“A Creative Life: Conversation with James Ponsoldt”

A conversation about a life and career in the arts and humanities with filmmaker James Ponsoldt, who will visit Athens for a day of events at Ciné in celebration of the Willson Center’s 30th anniversary. Ponsoldt will take part in this public discussion with Nicholas Allen, FranklinProfessor of English and director of the Willson Center.A public reception will begin at 5 p.m. in the CinéLab, and the conversation will begin at 5:30. Ponsoldt will also introduce screenings of Peter Bogdanovich’s 1971 adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s The Last Picture Show, at 3 p.m., and his own critically acclaimed 2013 film The Spectacular Now, which was filmed in Athens, at 7:15. All events are free and open to the public.Books by Tim Tharp, author of the novel on which The Spectacular Now is based, McMurtry, Bogdanovich and more will be available from Avid Bookshop.James Ponsoldt was raised in Athens, and received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University as well as an M.F.A. in directing from Columbia University. His films include The Spectacular Now, The End of the Tour, The Circle, Smashed, and Off the Black. Films that James has written and/or directed have won multiple awards at the Sundance Film Festival, been nominated for Independent Spirit Awards, and been honored by the National Board of Review. James directed the pilot for the Netflix series “Master of None,” co-wrote the graphic novel Refresh, Refresh (selected by Alison Bechdel for Best American Comics), and is developing films with Disney, A24, Fox, and Plan B.
