The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture was endowed by a donation by Andrew and Kathy Coley in memory of their daughter Andrea Carson Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in Women's and Gender Studies. Each spring, our Andrea Carson Coley Lecture brings to campus scholars doing cutting-edge research in the area of LGBTQ+ studies. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs as our 32nd annual Andrea Carson Coley lecturer. Poet, author, and self-avowed "Queer Black Troublemaker and Black Feminist Love Evangelist," Gumbs has rooted herself in a community-building ethic. Her co-edited volume Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines changed the conversation on parenting. Her poetic trilogy Spill, M. Archive, and Dub redefined the genre and inspired myriad works by other artists. Her most recent work, Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde, has been called a revelation and hailed as a must-read book by Time magazine and Publisher's Weekly. A scholar-artist whose work spans disciplines and traditions, Gumbs is a national treasure, and her insights are more relevant than ever.

In this interactive lecture, Dr. Gumbs will draw on her research about artists such as Lorde and June Jordan to elucidate longstanding queer Black time travel methodologies and pathways.
