Global health faces a crisis of identity and purpose. The fraught history of what is now referred to as “global health” has not been adequately confronted. And the increasingly assertive calls for the “decolonization” of global health are outpacing the innovations needed to make global health a more ethical enterprise. Dr. Jim Lavery will draw on the work of Cass Sunstein to suggest that the kinds of changes required in global health will rely on two fundamental mechanisms: demonstration and contagion. Recent work on “new stakeholder theory” and innovation argue that stakeholder engagement and improved organizational learning can deliver the kinds of change mechanisms envisioned by Sunstein that can help global health organizations to transition into a more ethical future. Lavery will also present his own work and experiences in global health and global health research to illustrate the logic and potential of this new way of thinking about global health ethics.
