Studio Workshop: The Human Figure

Classes and Workshops, Visual Arts

Join Athens artist and educator Heather Foster for a four-part series of studio sessions focused on the human figure. The workshop will draw inspiration from examples of figurative works in the museum’s collection, including many not currently on view. Students will try their hand at gesture drawings, paper shadow portraits, live model drawings and abstracted paintings. This workshop is open to artists of all levels of experience, from enthusiastic beginners to more seasoned practitioners. The cost of the course is a $15 materials fee, which will cover all necessary supplies for the four sessions. Space is limited, please call 706-542-8863 or email callan@uga.edu to reserve a spot.

Shepherd’s Men Run

Service / Volunteer Opportunities

The Shepherd’s Men, a group of military veterans and active service members will be running a half-marathon to raise awareness and funding for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The team will assemble at the UGA Chapel and run west on U.S. 78 to the American Legion Post in Statham. They will be running on the streets of Athens wearing 22 pound flak jackets symbolizing the number of U.S. veterans who die by suicide every day.

Ally Training and Community Building Workshop

This 4-hour training is designed for individuals who wish to learn more about what it means to be an ally to people belonging to a marginalized or targeted community. In this workshop, participants will learn skills related to generating awareness of how to leverage privilege for social justice change, initiating courageous conversations and dialogues across differences, consciousness-raising in speaking up and disrupting patterns of oppression and sustaining social change strategies that are consistent and meaningful. Presenters use didactic and experiential exercises, media, small and large group dialogue and worksheets to cultivate a deeper understanding of building community and advocacy. Participants will learn best practices in self-education and accountability skills helpful in being a strong ally and a community builder.

This interactive session will examine UGA’s First-Year Odyssey’s program goals as well as best practices in how to design and structure a successful FYO course.
