"Biodiversity in the Blue Ridge—the Story of the Southern Highlands Reserve." Robert Balentine and his wife Betty formed the Southern Highlands Reserve as an organization that focuses on research and education of the rare ecology of the Southern Appalachian mountains. The Reserve is located on 120 acres in Western North Carolina at an elevation of 4,500 feet. With an emphasis on education and conservation, The Southern Highlands Reserve is dedicated to celebrating the natural history of the Southern Appalachian mountains.
