Concert: Gryphon Trio, Robert Pomakov
Performing Arts Center
Hugh Hodgson Hall
The Gryphon Trio, one of the world’s preeminent piano trios, joins with Metropolitan Opera bass Robert Pomakov in a performance featuring works by the Russian composers Modest Mussorgsky and Dmitri Shostakovich and Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov.
A landmark in the history of Russian music, the "Songs and Dances of Death" is considered to be Mussorgsky’s masterpiece in the genre. Each of the four songs in the cycle deals with death in a poetic manner and reflects experiences common in 19th century Russia, the death of a child, the death of a young woman, the death of a drunken peasant and death in the time of war.
