Recent artwork by the original Georgia Sea Grant artists on display at Athens Academy.

In 1980, the Georgia Sea Grant program asked 11 artists to create a collection of artwork based on coastal subject matter. The original collection was transferred to the Georgia Museum of Art in 1996. Athens Academy has gathered recent artwork by the same artists and the pieces will be displayed on the school’s campus and is open to the public.

Congress established the National Sea Grant program in 1966 to encourage the development, use, and conservation of marine and Great Lakes resources by tapping the expertise residing in university centers of coastal states. Georgia entered the program in 1971. In 1980, the University of Georgia was awarded Sea Grant College status.

The gallery is open Monday-Friday during school hours, and the exhibit continues through Friday, Feb 24.

Opening reception: Jan. 8, 2-4 p.m.

Panel discussion on the interaction of art and science, Feb. 19, 2-4 p.m.
