Conference: Home Economics: Classroom, Corporate and Cultural Interpretations Revisited

A multidisciplinary conference exploring the origins of home economics, its cultural context, and changes throughout the 20th century. Scholars from history, women's studies, and family and consumer sciences examine academic programs, career paths, continuity of core concepts, gender and racial issues, and relevance for the future of this enduring field of study and profession. Approaches to historical research are included.
Presentations by:
Peggy Meszaros, a professor of human development at Virginia Tech who is the principal investigator on a project in Appalachia designed to encourage young women to study math and science in high school and in college; and
Megan Elias, a history professor at City University of New York, and author of Stir It Up: Home Economics in American Culture.
