Folk instrument orchestras have been popular in Russia for more than 150 years. Originally made up of the plucked instruments of the dorma and balalaika families, in recent decades the addition of accordions and non-folk instruments such as the flute and oboe has resulted in ensembles with a uniquely engaging sound. Under the leadership of conductor Boris Voron, the orchestra features professional soloists and students from Moscow’s Gnessin Russian Academy of Music. This engaging pops concert includes an array of popular selections as well as traditional Russian folk music.
